C L A I R E · H A N K I N S O N
When I am painting in oils, or drawing in charcoal,  I am drawn to the essence and the ambiguity of my subject.  Whether I am by a wild sea, in the middle of remote woodlands, or looking at the shape of an ancient object,  it is finding the balance between the abstraction and reality of the subject that I would hope to convey in my work.

I love the use of very dark against very light contrast in my images, and equally, the intensity of vibrant colour in a painting.  Many artists’ work has influenced my own, amongst these are Nicholas de Stael, and William Scott, together with many contemporary artists as well.
